Origin of fast ion diffusion in super-ionic conductors

Super-ionic conductor materials have great potential to enable novel technologies in energy storage and conversion. However, it is not yet understood why only a few materials can deliver exceptionally higher ionic conductivity than typical solids or how one can design fast ion conductors following simple principles. Using ab initio modelling, here we show that fast diffusion in super-ionic cond...

Oxygen and Cation Diffusion Processes in Oxygen Ion Conductors

We discuss oxygen and cation diffusion processes in oxygen ion conductors. While the high oxygen diffusivity determines the proper oxygen ion conductivity, slow cation diffusion processes are important for sintering and degradation processes. In the first part of the paper we discuss an analytical model for the ionic conductivity of a strongly acceptor doped, fluorite-type oxygen ion conductor,...

Collective ionic motion in oxide fast-ion-conductors

Structural correlations and dynamic disorder in the oxide fastion-conductor Ba2In2O5 are deduced from a systematic study of the energy-hypersurface using periodic density-functional theory examining 2 10 local energy minima. The structure observed experimentally is interpreted as a time and spatial average of those minima which are energetically-accessible. The nature of these has extensive imp...

Back-exchange: a novel approach to quantifying oxygen diffusion and surface exchange in ambient atmospheres.

A novel two-step Isotopic Exchange (IE) technique has been developed to investigate the influence of oxygen containing components of ambient air (such as H2O and CO2) on the effective surface exchange coefficient (k*) of a common mixed ionic electronic conductor material. The two step 'back-exchange' technique was used to introduce a tracer diffusion profile, which was subsequently measured usi...

Exchange between sub-surface and surface oxygen vacancies on CeO2(111): a new surface diffusion mechanism.

Using first principles calculations for O vacancy diffusion on CeO(2)(111), we locate a surface diffusion mechanism, the two-step O vacancy exchange one, which is more favored than the most common hopping mechanism. By analyzing the results, we identify quantitatively the physical origin of why the two-step exchange mechanism is preferred.
